    Angel Name: Tiffany Welles

    Profile

Tiffany WellesTiffany Welles was played by Shelley Hack (1979-1980) and her debut coincided with the 4th season premier, Love Boat Angels, which was a cross-over with fellow ABC hit, The Love Boat. She was Charlie’s 5th angel, replacing the "smart unofficial leader" Sabrina Duncan, as the classy one.t's fitting that Tiffany Welles was brought in to fill the vacancy left by the departure of Sabrina Duncan (Kate Jackson). Sabrina had always been a classy, restrained woman compared to the more "girly" and bubbly Angels, and Tiffany was definitely a woman after Sabrina's heart. Indeed, Tiffany, nicknamed "Tiff" by her co-workers, was even more refined than her predecessor, carrying herself elegantly and with aristocratic sophistication at all times. Tall, beautiful, smart and very classy, Tiffany brought an air of class and elegance to the show (which unfortunately didn't draw the attention of the audience). Unlike the previous Angels who are all from California, Tiffany is a native of Boston.  She is more refined and educated than the others, pledging Kappa Omega Psi in college, graduating from the Boston police academy top in her class, playing the violin, and speaking Latin. Her father, Lieutenant Welles, is also a longtime friend of Charlie's. And, while she jumped at the chance when Charlie offered her a place in his team, she eventually felt the pull of her native East Coast, and returned to the glamorous world she was brought up in.

The arrival of Shelley Hack as Tiffany Welles at the start of the fourth season meant that whilst her character would now be considered the "smart one", she couldn't just arrive and take over as "team leader", which is what the series needed. Coming in and immediately bossing Kelly and Kris around during an assignment would really have had audience's dislike her.

Add to the fact that, the writers decided to "gradually" introduce Tiffany into the fold whilst not giving her anything other than play a supporting role in the episodes that aired early in the fourth season. Tiffany remained a peripheral character for the first several weeks of the 4th season ("Love Boat Angels" - the fourth-season opener was a good indication that the writers of "Charlie's Angels" had know real clue what to do with their new arrival), which resulted in the following:

Viewers lost interest in the series (which is what happened and ratings fell) and they didn't develop any interest with either Shelley Hack or her character Tiffany Welles (which was the main issue of contention here. It wasn't as though audience's wanted to hate her, she just wasn't given the opportunity to do anything of substance and consequently was pushed into the background - huge mistake!)

The series presented solo episodes with the focus on one Angel and this proved to be another mistake. As a diversion, every now and again it's good. Unfortunately in the fourth season, these stories popped up quite frequently - and to add insult to injury, Jaclyn & Cheryl's "solo" adventures aired before Shelley's. The first attempts to give any significant depth to her character did not occur until the episodes "Angels on Campus" and "Angel Hunt" which aired November 28th and December 5th 1979, respectively. These two episodes are pivotal because the former establishes Tiffany's background and character while the latter solidifies her relationship with Kelly and Kris, and while they were among the first episodes filmed (clips from them appear in the season's opening credits) they were aired too late in the season to captivate viewers. So by the time the writers got around to highlighting "the new girl", it was too little too late. Damn shame as Shelley Hack was quite good and Tiffany was able to proved her worth as an Angel. Unfortunately, the damage was done. Ratings had fallen, and future of the show was thrown into doubt.

Past: Tiffany came from a very well-to-do family - her mother was a Latin teacher and her father a police chief who was an old friend of Charlie's. She attended the Whitley College and was the President of Kappa Omega Psi and then joined the Boston Police Academy. Tiffany proves that it is her strength and not nepotism that got her foot in the Townsend Agency. Studied in the field of parapsychology, Tiffany is also an accomplished violin and volleyball player.

Fashion: Tiffany dresses in a very classy and elegant style with long dresses and high fashion clothes of the late 70s. She also looks great in a bathing suite.

CarAlong with her place as an Angel, Tiffany inherited Sabrina's trusty orange Ford Pinto with license plate number CALIFORNIA 127-UBO.

Covers and Techniques: Tiffany is always cool, calm and sophisticated. She lacks the athletic abilities her fellow Angels had - she is really bad on roller skates and doesn't seem to be able to surf but she is a very sharp gun shooter. Tiffany is the intellectual Angel having a vast range of knowledge. Some of her undercover roles included a track driver, a senator's aide, a violin player, a hooker and a nurse.

Why did she leave: The wanderlust had gotten the best of Shelley after only one short year of detective work. She left the Agency in favor of new and unidentified adventures on the East Coast. Much like Sabrina's departure, Tiffany is explained away in the following season opener, and is never seen or mentioned again, even in the final episode’s clip show.
